CONGO-DEM.REPUBLIC, 10 DEC 1998 (17:15)

BISHOP OF UVIRA, "PEACE AND SOLIDARITY IN THE NAME OF CHRIST" "I improvised an appeal, asking the population victim of the Banyamulenge genocide, to not resort to violence.
Because, looking at Christ nailed to the Cross, we must all offer love, forgiveness, solidarity and tolerance to one another".

This was the statement made this morning to MISNA by Msgr. Jerome Gapangwa Nteziryayo, Bishop of Uvira (Democratic Republic of Congo), regarding his declarations transmitted yesterday by Radio France and Voice of America.

"Only Christ - the 57 year old Munyamulenge prelate, born in Kalongi (Diocese of Uvira), continued - can bring people to experience an everlasting peace".
In confirmation of what was declared yesterday, Msgr. Gapangwa also emphasised to MISNA the great necessity for reconciliation: "No ethnic group can base its survival on the death of another, which ever it may be".
"Everyone has the right - the prelate stated strongly - to live wherever they want and war is certainly not a solution".
"To kill one man to save the lives of others - added the prelate, ordained 26 years ago, for 13 years at the head of the Diocese in South Kivu - is like erroneously correcting God's will".
"My appeal - Msgr. Gapangwa explained - was also formulated in consideration of the path towards the Jubilee of the year 2000. Let us look to our merciful Father - he continued - trying to forgive and reach true reconciliation. It is necessary to join together to "build a Society of Love". A goal the Bishop asked MISNA and other information agency's to help reach, with the exhortation:
"Help us rediscover how to live together"!
