CAIRO, Egypt (December 13, 1998 11:40 a.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) -- President Hosni Mubarak and his Congolese counterpart Laurent Kabila on Sunday discussed ways of ending the four-month civil war in Congo.
The two leaders explored the possibility of mediation by Egypt, a member of the Organization of African Unity, to end conflict in the central African country, said a government source.
The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, gave no details.
Kabila refuses to negotiate with the Congolese rebels and has insisted on only talking with the guerrillas' backers, Rwanda and Uganda. Kabila is supported by Zimbabwe, Angola, Chad and Namibia.
The rebels are disaffected Congolese soldiers and opposition leaders made up of ethnic Tutsis who accuse Kabila of corruption and ethnic favoritism.
Kabila arrived in Egypt on Saturday and is scheduled to leave Monday.
