1990 saw the birth, in São Paulo (Brazil), of a reflection group called Atabaque, which was concerned with theology and black consciousness.
It unites people from the various disciplines of theology, philosophy, pedagogy and others, black and white people, men and women, people
from the christian churches and from afro-brasilian religions.

The group is tied with the “Program of Theology and Afro-american Cultures” of the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians (EATWOT). Its purpose is to tackle with greater intensity the challenges
and the faith praxis and struggle of black communities in Brazil.

The name Atabaque express the desire to became a vehicle of communication between the various faith communities, to became a voice
that calls for praise and justice, for dance and fraternity, for a society
free of discrimination.
