KIGALI, Dec 22 (AFP) - Rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said Tuesday theyhad appointed governors and other officials in four provinces under their control in the east of thecountry.

The Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD), the rebels' political wing, named governors and vice governors for the provinces of Maniema, North and South Kivu and Orientale, according to an RCD statement received in the Rwandan capital

Respectively, the governors for these provinces were named as Nestor Kiimbi, Leonard Kanyamuhanga Gafundi, Norbert Basheshengezi Katintima and Theo Baruti Hamisi.

The rebels, who rose up against President Laurent Kabila in August with support from Rwanda and Uganda, control a little more than a third of the DRC.

Kanyamuhanga Gafundi is the only one of the four governors-designate to have occupied his post under the Kabila regime.

The rebel communique also named two vice governors and other local government officials for each of the four provinces.

The new governors are due to be sworn-in before the executive committee of the RCD, the statement said.
