Rebel Editor In Car Crash

Mbarara - The Editor of the newspaper for Congo rebels, Nicaise Kibel'bel Oka is recovering from coma following an accident that claimed two people at Kyebugombe 22 kms on the Kabale-Mbarara Road Tuesday afternoon. Oka was enroute from Kampala to Goma.

The Police recovered two bundles of the newspaper known as Le Coulisses printed at The New Vision factory and destined for the rebel held parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Le Coulisses is the mouthpiece for the Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD) rebels.

John Bosco Kisitu, 25, a resident of Makindye in Kampala and Teresa Ndabaire, 50, of Kisoro town were confirmed dead. Oka's brother, Jores Duma told The New Vision yesterday: "My brother is admitted in Kabale Hospital. He smashed his head, arms legs and other parts of his body. He was in coma but he is now slowly regaining consciousness. . ." Oka escaped from detention in Kinshasa following the rebels onslaught on the DRC capital in August this year.

He left his wife and four children behind. One lady who suffered serious injuries and was by yesterday afternoon in Kabale Hospital theatre was identified as Mariam Rugamba, 29, of Nyarugege in Kigali, Rwanda.

Others admitted to Kabale Hospital are: Justine Mukesharuko, 22, of Gitarama, Shariita Wuwaseme, 26, of Nyamirambo in Kigali and a student of Nkoyoyo SS Mukono, Charles Kalunga, who was going for holidays in Nyabugaho, Rwanda. According to Police spokesperson Bob Ngobi, the other injurred passengers were rushed to Mbarara Hospital.

Ngobi said the driver of the minibus identified as Ismail Kanyazi of Kigali, appeared in Kabale district court yesterday and pleaded not guilty to causing death, causing injuries and reckless driving. He was released on a court bond of sh500,000.
