Lusaka DRC talks set for mid January

January 7, 1999

Lusaka - Lusaka DRC talks set for mid January The long awaited Democratic Republic of Congo peace talks will be held in mid January, announced President Frederick Chiluba yesterday.

The talks to be held in Lusaka, according to President Chiluba, will be attended by the rebels Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD). President Chiluba said he was very confident that the ceasefire would be implemented after the talks.

He also noted that all the warring parties in Congo were now agreed to meet in order to iron out their differences. President Chiluba said he was still consulting with other leaders in the region to agree on the actual date of the summit.

The rebel leaders on Monday went to have consultative talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni before flying to Rwanda to meet President Pascar Bizimungu on a similar mission. Democratic Republic of Congo President Laurent Desire Kabila has constantly accused Rwanda and Uganda of supporting the rebels trying to oust his government.
