Rwenzori Aid Halted

December 16, 1998

Kampala - The International Committee of the Red Cross has suspended relief food supply to victims displaced by the Allied Democratic Forces rebel war in the Rwenzoris.

Head of delegation for Kampala George Comninos yesterday said their operations were suspended a month ago. He said there have been accusations regarding the charity's impartiality in its operations.

He declined to say whether the complaint was from the Government or the rebels. "We have decided to suspend our operations temporarily until we iron out some of the problems we have, you know, to be able to fulfill our mandate, we need acceptability and the right understanding of our impartial nature," he said.

Army Second Division Political Commissar Captain Kamurali Katwekyeire December 10 told a workshop on food security and agricultural modernisation at the Boma ground in Kasese town that ICRC had suspended its operations in the region. Comninos yesterday said they were talking to both parties to rectify the situation. "We are assisting over 23,000 internally displaced people," he said.
