Congolese Fleeing Into Kisoro
December 15, 1998
Kampala - Many Congolese nationals are fleeing reprisals in their war-torn
country and streaming across the border into the south western district of
Kisoro. Sixty-four Congolese refugees, hitherto stranded at Bunagana border post,
Sunday arrived in Mbarara town in transit to Kyangwali camp, Hoima, to rejoin
their relatives.
The refugees said reprisals between the rebels and the local communities had intensified in the west of the country. It is not clear how many Congolese are now stranded at the border in Kisoro, but the number is said to be growing everyday.
Kisoro was out of phone range to confirm this. The refugees recounted horrific stories of torture and rape by both government troops and the rebels.
