Uganda To Pacify Congo Rebels

December 15, 1998

Kampala - Uganda is to mediate in talks to reconcile the two rebel movements fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a senior Ugandan security officer has said.

The meeting between the Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD) led by Prof. Wamba dia Wamba and the Congolese Liberation Movement of Jean Pierre Bemba was scheduled to take place in Eastern Congo last weekend, the source added. Wamba and Bemba were recently in Kampala.

"We want to reconcile them. There was a serious misunderstanding between the two. We are trying to make sure they work together, otherwise if they don't, the situation in Congo will remain volatile and it will affect our security back home," the military official said Friday. The official said, Uganda's intervention in the rebel groups' conflict should not be taken as a strategy to fight President Laurent Kabila.
