Lusaka - Zambia on Tuesday hosts a summit of 13 heads of state on the situation
in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a Foreign Affairs spokesman announced
yesterday.
In a statement, the spokesman said President Chiluba had invited heads of state from Angola, Botswana, DR Congo, Kenya, Gabon, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The meeting would be preceded by a session of foreign and defence ministers of the invited countries which would take place on Monday.
On Wednesday, Congolese President Laurent Kabila was in Zambia where he held private consultative talks with Mr. Chiluba. President Chiluba was mandated by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) heads of state to mediate in the Congo problem in which a rebel group has been fighting to topple the Kabila government since August 2 and is demanding elections.
