Congo Allied Forces In DRC Change Command
December 11, 1998
Gweru, Zimbabwe (PANA) - The allied forces helping the government of the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in its war against rebels in the east have
changed their command.
Zimbabwe national army commander Gen. Vitalis Zvinavashe was quoted by the Zimbabwe news agency as saying Thursday that the allied forces' joint leader, Maj. Gen Mike Nyambuya of Zimbabwe, had been replaced by fellow countrymen Maj -Gen. Chimombe.
Zvinavashe said the change was authorised by all the allies Angola, Chad, DRC, Namibia and Zimbabwe and had already been effected.
"The work in the DRC is very stressful and you cannot keep one person there for long. Since we are not sure how long the war will take, Chimombe may also be replaced after his period of operation and he may be replaced by somebody else," said Zvinavashe.
Apart from admitting that it was not clear when the war in the DRC would end, Zvinavashe refused to reveal more on the activities of the allies.
