Journalist arrested, in poor health

New York - The following document was released by the Committee to Protect Journalists:

On 30 October 1998, Jean Jose Monzango Akonga, a 65-year-old journalist for the opposition newspaper "L'Alarme", was arrested in Kinshasa by judicial police in connection with an article he wrote concerning the departure to Belgium of the Minister of State for the Interior, Gaetan Kakudji, during wartime. The journalist is being held at the Penitential and Reeducation Center of Kinshasa (CPRK), and is reported to be in poor health. Akonga is not allowed visits by family members.
